Backchannels

WHAT ARE BACKCHANNELS

The University of Waterloo (of which Mr. P. is alumni) says backchannels are, "conversations that take place among students during a classroom lecture or presentation. The backchannel can be low-tech or high-tech, ranging from students whispering at the back of the classroom to texting each other with their iPhones."
I use digital backchannels during presentations to give a voice to larger groups or provide an opportunity be heard for those who might be reluctant to speak. They can provide a quick temperature check or help with important points or questions from the group. I also like that many digital companies allow me the option to filter them should I want to. You will find many online companies offer a backchannel service, including
Slido, Padlet, GoSoapBox and Twitter.

I have highlighted 2 of my personal favourites, Mentimetre and Google Slides as well as a great way to enable a backchannel in Google Classroom.

MENTIMETER

No sign-in required and anyone can participate (which has its benefits and drawbacks)

GOOGLE SLIDES

If your audience wishes to participate in the backchannel, they will need to sign in with a Google account

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

INTENDED FOR STUDENTS: This is a great way to encourage discussion on a specific topic/week within Google Classroom.
